Scenario:

Anne-Marie, a 35yo female, has presented to your ED with a 2-day history of sharp pain in her upper right arm and shoulder and a feeling of weakness in her right hand. There is no history of trauma.

Instructions for the candidate

You are the consultant in a tertiary ED. Please examine her right upper limb and explain to her the findings.

For the actor

You are normally fit and well, although quite stressed at present. You have been having a lot of neck pain and headaches thought to be due to muscular tension that is ongoing. It has improved a little following recent physiotherapy. Over the last couple of days you have noted a sharp pain running down the back of your upper arm from the shoulder to above the elbow. This comes on when you lift your arm up. Your arm has been feeling a little heavy.
